Pen Pic: At his best Will is a top quality defender who
can play with great assurance, using his strength and pace to entirely close
forwards out of the game. He is however prone to frustrating lapses in
concentration that can infuriate fans and have probably so far stopped him
making the progress in the game his talents would seem to merit. Will uses the ball well from
defence and has the ability to make strong runs from the back when given the
chance, however at times he either overplays or settles for the
agricultural clearance into the stand. Despite still having more to learn there
is no doubt Will has certainly improved during the last season and
has turned in a couple of really good displays that suggest some of his
confidence is gradually returning.
Unfortunately Will missed the
whole of September 2003 through a suspension picked up when sent off playing for
Gloucester United last Spring and this probably was a factor in the decision to
release him in early October with Will since returning to Cinderford. While the
decision to release him is understood to have been purely for financial reasons
it was handled badly and has left any possible return to City unlikely in the
near future.
Will
started off with the City youth team where he had a good goal scoring record,
sadly not yet continued in his adult career.
Graduated to a first team contract and regular starting role at City under Leroy
Rosenior having impressed in the youth team. His consistent solid performances
and smooth distribution earnt him trials at both Chelsea and Coventry City. Will
looked much less comfortable when asked to play at full back, and fell out of
favour when Brian Hughes replaced Rosenior. Steadman headed for the Forest to
find first team football, but found himself in and out of the side again at The
Causeway and his confidence took a hammering as he filled in roles all
across the park. Returned to City having had a decidedly wobbly 16 month
period with Cinderford Town under John Murphy. After several seasons of
mediocrity the arrival of Chris Burns seems to be helping him which is a great
relief to fans as his ready smile makes Will one of the most
cheerful and popular players at the club.
